A new psychiatric facility for offenders with mental disorders is planned near the College of Southern Nevada's West Charleston campus, expected to open in 2029 [6]. The facility, costing $420 million, will have 300 beds and is designed to alleviate capacity issues at existing psychiatric facilities like Lakes Crossing in Northern Nevada and Murray Stein Hospital in Las Vegas [6]. The Murray Stein Hospital will be shut down to make way for the Campus for Hope transitional housing project, slated for completion by 2027 [6]. Concerns from West Valley residents regarding traffic and crime have led to efforts to halt both the forensic facility and Campus for Hope projects [6]. The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services stated that the facility would replace the Stein Forensic Hospital and treat individuals needing competency restoration [6]. The project is still going through the legislature [6].
