UnitedHealthcare is actively negotiating with UAB Medicine to renew their network relationship, aiming for an affordable agreement that provides continued network access for consumers and employers in Alabama. The current contract is effective through July 31, 2025. UnitedHealthcare states that UAB is demanding a significant price increase, which would drive up healthcare costs in Alabama. UAB recently acquired five St. Vincent's hospitals in November 2024, and their proposal includes a substantial price hike for these hospitals as well. UnitedHealthcare wants to keep UAB in their network and believes their proposed rates are fair and reasonable, helping to slow the rise in healthcare costs. If an agreement is not reached, UAB hospitals, facilities, and physicians would be out of network for certain UnitedHealthcare plans effective August 1, 2025.

Bryan Palmer has been CEO of UnitedHealthcare's business in Georgia and Alabama since 2023. He most recently served as growth officer in the company's southeast region and has been with UnitedHealth since 2002. He started at UnitedHealthcare as an account manager for Key Accounts in South Florida and has since held a variety of Small Business and Key Accounts sales and account management leadership roles until 2016, when he assumed the role of regional growth officer for the Southeast region.
