Thomas A Steinbrunner, FACHE (Col, USAF, Ret) was appointed as the Executive Director of the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) on March 14, 2021. Mr. Steinbrunner collaborates with Department of Defense, Tribal, and Coast Guard health care systems to deliver health care services at 9 locations for 36,000 enrolled veterans throughout the state of Alaska. He leads a staff of 740 personnel, supporting various facilities and programs. He serves as the Chairperson of the Alaska Federal Healthcare Partnership. Prior to joining the VA as the Alaska VA Healthcare System's Associate Director, Mr. Steinbrunner completed a 34-year military career in 2017, serving in leadership positions at several medical treatment facilities, in deployed operations, and at regional, Air Force, and Department of Defense levels. He also led multi-national humanitarian missions. He is Board Certified in Healthcare Management, as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Jennifer Price was appointed as the Associate Director of the Alaska VA Healthcare Systems (AVAHS) on July 18, 2021. Prior to this appointment, Ms. Price served as the Chief Financial Officer for the AVAHS since January 2016. She has extensive experience in financial management and governmental accounting, starting her government career with the Denali Commission in 2001. The Associate Director is an integral member of the Executive Management team, responsible for overseeing Fiscal Management, Logistics, Facilities Management, Health Administration, Public Affairs and Voluntary Services, Police Operations, and Rural Health departments supporting health care services for 34,000 enrolled veterans throughout the state of Alaska. Ms. Price has a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Alaska Southeast and an Undergraduate Degree in Organizational Management from Alaska Pacific University.
Cynthia A. Joe, M.D., became the Chief of Staff of the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) on May 11, 1998. During Dr. Joe's tenure, the AVAHS has expanded its presence in Alaska with the success of the VA/DoD Joint Venture Military Treatment Facility and various Community Based Outpatient Clinics and Outreach Clinics. Dr. Joe's clinical and administrative experience includes both VA and other federal agencies. She is a member of the VA/DoD JVMTF Executive Committee and Joint Venture Business Operations Committee, and chairs the AVAHS Professional Staff Committee and Medical Executive Committee. She is a VA clinical representative to the Alaska Federal Health Care Partnership and a member of the Clinical Team of the Alaska Federal Health Care Access Network. Dr. Joe received her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and has held additional qualifications in Geriatric Medicine. She is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Physician Executives. She completed the VA Clinical Leadership Institute and Leadership VA programs.
Mr. Francisco Hurtado, RN, MHA, MBA, NA-BC; was appointed as the Interim Director on June 21, 2024. Prior to working for the Alaska VA Healthcare System, Mr. Hurtado held several critical positions including Chief Nurse of Primary Care Services, Chief Nurse Acute Care, Chief Nurse Inpatient Mental Health and Emergency Department, Chief Nurse Mental Health and DOD Joint Venture, Acting Chief of Quality Management at the VA Northern California Health Care System (VA NCHCS).
Kathrine Hardy was appointed the Interim Associate Director Patient Care Services / Nurse Executive of the Alaska VA Healthcare Systems on July 15, 2024. Prior to her appointment, Kathrine Hardy served as the Chief of Employee Occupational Health at the AVAHS. Kathrine graduated with her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, RN, from Austin Peay State University. She returned to school, Murray State University, and graduated in 2000 with her Master's in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner. She has worked a combination of Family Practice, Internal Medicine, and Emergency Medicine for more than 24 years.
